CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT
This piece plays off the ancient apotropaic tradition of interring either dead or live cats into the foundations of buildings to ward off evil, bad luck and mice. As the presence of the animal itself within the piece is hidden, viewers would only become alerted to its presence when reading the accompanying description. Thus the work aims to challenge our perceptions of reality. On the surface it appears to be a simple concrete foundation block, but at its heart it's a different animal entirely.
